Old Town Meets Modern: Introducing Than Tower Apartments
Exciting news – one of my favorite neighborhoods in Chicago has a brand-new luxury apartment building that just opened its doors. Than Tower, at 343 W. Schiller is the newest, shiniest luxury apartment community in Chicago’s Old Town neighborhood.
After keeping a watchful and patient eye on construction, I’m so pleased that Than Tower has finally opened to renters in mid-July 2020. It’s ironic that this new mid-rise is located in Old Town, because it’s clearly anything but old-fashioned. Sneak a peek at these super modern new apartments…
Make Way For Modern
Than Tower sits on the corner of Sedgwick and Schiller and whoa – it makes a statement. Miami-based developer Lakshmi Capital worked with Chicago architecture firm Brininstool + Lynch on the design.
The sleek burgundy and silver exterior metal panels are much more modern than its classic brick neighbors, and I totally love it. At 9-stories, the building has 105 units, including a mix of studios, 1 bedroom, and 2 bedroom apartments.
Eco-Cool in Old Town
Than Tower isn’t just pretty – it has a cool eco-friendly feature that’ll I’m totally nerding out over.
It’s the first apartment building in Chicago to use INTUS windows. This Washington DC-based company manufactures windows that aren’t just energy-efficient (and cut down on noise – hooray!) but they do a lot of good too.
Their goal is to reduce carbon emissions, and as an extra act of kindness, they plant a tree for each window that’s purchased. Take one peek at Than Tower and count up those windows. They’ve practically planted a small forest!
Light, Bright and Beautiful
The apartment interiors are like a beautiful blank slate just waiting for your personal touch. Even the smaller units feel airy thanks to the bright white and shades of gray color palette.
They feature modern luxuries that make apartment living feel posh – stainless steel appliances, light quartz counters and in-unit washer and dryer (it’s the little things that are the big things!). And, it’s all pulled together with tall exposed concrete ceilings, light gray plank wood flooring and sunny floor-to-ceiling windows.
For some extra sun, grab a east-facing unit, complete with a spacious balcony. The unobstructed view of the city is a luxury all its own.
Thoughtful Detail and Amenities
If you work from home, you’ll love this. The forward-thinking designers even incorporated a built-in desk in every unit for an at-home workstation. It could also be used as a book nook or a makeup station. Heck, you could build a decorative shrine to your favorite sports team, celebrity crush, your pet…or my personal favorite…the perfect place for the pile of mail.
Residents at Than Tower also have fantastic amenities to enjoy at the rooftop level including a gym, indoor lounge and outdoor deck complete with a fire pit and grilling stations.
Cats and dogs are also welcome! Yes, Old Town has another great pet-friendly apartment in the ‘hood. There’s an indoor dog run and a state-of-the-art dog spa to keep your fuzzy buddy squeaky-clean year-round.
Old Town Neighborhood Highlights
When you live at Than Tower, you live in the coolest neighborhood of them all – Old Town. This small neighborhood is just north of downtown. Its history is filled with art, music and cabbage (more about all of that right here), and today it’s the most neighborhood-y place to live in downtown Chicago.
Preserving Culture
Old Town has pretty deep roots when it comes to creative pioneers. Right across the street from Than Tower is Edgar Miller Legacy. This non-profit organization preserves the work of Edgar Miller, a virtuoso artist who led a creative community in the 1920s and 30s and worked with some of Chicago’s early legendary architects.
You’ve got to check this place out. You’ll leave with great design inspiration for your own apartment. Plus, taking in the Miller collection is a cool way to imagine life as a bohemian “hipster” living in Chicago 100 years ago.
To Keep You Entertained
Multiple art fairs and street festivals take place in Old Town annually, including the famous Old Town Art Fair. And, there is plenty of nightlife, restaurants, pubs, theaters and comedy clubs to keep you entertained year-round. Old Town Pour House, and its 90 craft beers, is just a 4-minute walks from Than Tower’s front door.
For outdoor fun in the sun, Than Tower is only about a mile away from recreational green space at Lincoln Park, North Avenue Beach, Oak Street Beach, and the Lakefront Trail. Also, just a few blocks walk south is Seward Park with ball fields, basketball courts and a playground.
Getting Around Town
Old Town is popular for folks looking to have a close commute to downtown, or ease getting to other neighborhoods and even the suburbs. Than Tower is a transit-oriented apartment building, located just a couple blocks south of the CTA Brown Line Sedgwick station and also a short walk to the CTA Red Line Clark/Division station.
Access to Lake Shore Drive and I-90/94 is also a snap via North Ave. or Division St. Than Tower also has an indoor heated parking garage and bike storage.
